I earned a BA in Geography with an emphasis in cartography as well as a GIS certificate. I have been working in the GIS field for three years now.
Unfortunately, the education I received focused on cartography and only taught the basics of GIS and did not go into using a database.
My first job dealt primarily with image orthorectification as well as creating large raster data sets for analysis. I did not get any database experience.
At my new job we use information from a large database server to create maps and figures. As of now I am not required to have to know how to use the database, but I would like to.
I have been attempting to learn as much about using databases on my own (online tutorials, books etc) and have made some progress in picking up the basics. I find it is hard learning this way and I am not sure I am going about this the right way.
Anyway, I guess my question is does anyone know of good books, tutorials, online classes etc that would help a GIS professional pick up database knowledge? What would be the best way to learn, short of going back to school?
Sorry for the long post. |

If you are using ESRI's ArcGIS, they have many online tutorials and several are free.

The majority of GIS databases are quite simple to understand. I have not been on any formal training courses I just use "Idiot's Guide...." books to try it out.
What GIS database are you dealing with? |
